There can be a lot of confusion about whether certain foods are allowed in the world of popular diets.
If you’re trying to avoid carbs but want to enjoy your favorite snack, it’s best to know for sure if popcorn is keto or not!
Keto: What is it?
The ketogenic diet is a low-carb, high-fat eating plan.
On this diet, the body enters into what’s known as “ketosis,” where fat from food sources is used for fuel instead of carbohydrates (glucose) typically sourced from carbohydrate-dense foods like bread and pasta.
For an individual to enter into ketosis they would need to limit their carb intake to less than 50 grams per day through nutritional consumption or use their own stored energy in the form of fats and proteins.
This number may vary depending on your activity level but should be roughly around 100g total carbs daily.
The goal with this type of dietary restriction is that we can turn our bodies from sugar burners to fat-burning machines by limiting glucose metabolism within the liver.
The problem with this is that when we ingest any of the foods like (-Popcorn -Waffles -Pasta -Potatoes), they all convert into glucose within the body and so would not be suitable for ketosis:
In addition, it should be noted that high fiber carbohydrates such as those found in sweet potatoes, carrots, or bananas are also excluded from this diet because although these may have lower carbohydrate counts (20g versus say 50g)
then technically break down slower than their counterparts like pasta or bread which can still give you an insulin spike despite being classified as low carb.
The result? You will find yourself feeling hungry less often (but still regularly), and you’ll be less hungry when you are, which means that your total caloric intake will go down.
Is popcorn keto?
Popcorn is a snack that many people enjoy, but what about if you are on the keto diet? Is popcorn keto-friendly? That is a question many people ask.
The answer to this question all depends on many things and how you prepare them. There are 3 different ways to make popcorn and when you do so, it can affect whether or not it is considered healthy for your diet.
Today we will discuss these three methods and see which one would be best for those following a keto lifestyle!
Is popcorn allowed on Keto?
Popcorn might be low in carbs, but it doesn’t cut keto.
Keto followers should not eat any type of grains or sugar and popcorn is a grain that contains wheat and corn.
When eating on the keto, you want to avoid all forms of sugars so no honey flavorings are allowed either.
Popcorn will spike your blood sugar levels due to its high glycemic index which makes it very similar to white bread and pasta.
For one cup of air-popped popcorn:
- 1g protein
- 0g fat
- 30 calories
- 5g Carbohydrates
- 6g total carbs
- 1g fiber
Popcorn is a grain, and all grains are not keto-friendly.
Some people have found that if they take the time to make it in an air popper, popcorn may be low enough carb for them without any oil or butter added.
This of course depends on your individual needs and goals.
For example: if you’re trying to maintain body weight by following a strict ketogenic diet plan – there’s no way around the fact that popcorn will not work for you as part of this lifestyle.
If however you eat very few carbs but still want some crunchy food while watching movies with friends or just snacking at night when feeling hungry (which happens) then go ahead and indulge!
The occasional treat isn’t going to do any harm.
Will popcorn make me stop being in ketosis?
It’s hard to say whether popcorn will kick you out of ketosis.
The answer is going to depend on how much you eat and what type of things your other carbs are coming from that day.
If all your other carbs for the day come from vegetables, then one or two servings won’t be a problem.
However, if it comes from something like breadsticks (which have around 20g per serving) then yes – eating too many servings could potentially knock you out of ketosis as they’ll put you over 50g/day which would push you into carbohydrate-loading mode rather than fat-burning mode where ketones can build up in the body more easily.
It ultimately just depends on exactly what else was happening with your diet that day.
Popcorn can be healthy if it is made correctly.

-Microwave Popcorn (not keto-friendly)
-Air Popped Corn (keto-friendly, but not as tasty as the other two methods)
-Roasted and Salted Caramel Popcorn (the best option for those on a keto diet).
A microwaveable popcorn bag may seem like an easy way to have this snack in your home at all times, but they come with some risks!
This type of popcorn is usually very high in calories and saturated fats, making you hungrier later. It’s also typically loaded with artificial colors and flavors which aren’t good for anyone.

Air-popped corn has fewer calories and saturated fats and lacks that nice roasted flavor we love so much when eating store-bought caramel corn.
This type of popcorn will still contain some artificial colors and flavors as well.
Roasted and Salted Caramel Popcorn
The best way to make your own tasty, low-calorie/low-fat homemade version of this treat is by roasting the kernels in a pan with butter first until they get all crispy and golden brown on the outside!
Then add salt (or other toppings) to taste once everything cools off for an even better flavor! Not sure how much you should microwave?
